Why your child should apply

DYLN provides a learning experience outside of the classroom. How do I navigate a room full of strangers? How do I introduce myself? How can I become a better leader, citizen and friend? How do I network to find a great internship for the summer?

“As a parent, I can’t thank you enough for developing a program that has made a great impact on my daughter in a very short period of time… I can tell you with great confidence that DYLN has, and will continue to, not only broaden her perspective, but expedite her learning process.  What a gift.”
– Parent of a DYLN Scholar, Class of 2013

“The program gave access to internships and other opportunities that would not have been possible without DYLN. Truly a commitment that has made a difference!”
– Parent of a DYLN Scholar, Class of 2014

The DYLN…curriculum exposed her to students from other schools in a collaborative learning environment.  The DYLN mentors afforded her the opportunity to learn and grow, and the guest speakers were impactful through the sharing of their stories of overcoming challenges to achieving.”
– Parent of a DYLN Scholar, Class of 2015

FAQ

What is expected of DYLN Scholars?

All DYLN Scholars will be required to attend every DYLN meeting and event. In addition, certain assignments will require time and preparation in between sessions. Since Scholars will be meeting distinguished leaders and speakers, a dress code will be enforced. Please see the Code of Responsibility in the application materials for more specific details on attendance and attire.

Can you tell me more about the mentors?

We conduct background checks on all DYLN Mentors and provide bios to the students. Our mentors will share real world experiences with the Scholars, offer additional support for program activities, and may assist with networking opportunities. A select number of DYLN graduates will be invited to become peer mentors during their senior year of high school.

How do Scholars get selected?

Interested students should complete the application and reference forms by the deadline. After reviewing all the submitted applications from their students, high schools may nominate up to 3 candidates to continue the selection process with us. DYLN will interview a limited number of nominees to be considered for the next class of DYLN Scholars.

When are the DYLN meetings?

In general, we meet about once a month during the school year from September through April. We kick off with our DYLNduction in September. Monthly meetings are either Monday evenings from 6:00-8:30pm or Sunday afternoons from 2:00-5:00pm. Venues may vary but are usually in the Wilmington or Newark area. This year, we also had a few community service dates, and DYLN Scholars were expected to attend at least one of these events. Our program ends with the DYLN Graduation which is typically at the end of April.
